Shayne Phua Shi Ying (b.1997, Singapore)

Shayne graduated with BA(Hons) in Communication Design from The Glasgow School of Art, Singapore. Formerly trained in Fine Arts, Ceramic is predominantly the medium of her practice.

She enjoys exploring the functionality of vessels and objects, thus as a method of appreciating their forms, she reconfigures them. Shayne also collects vintage pastry moulds to reinvent their purpose-sometimes utilising their clay reliefs to form body parts of the Ceramic vessel, other times collaging their clay reliefs to tell stories. Most of the works look into oral traditions, Chinese folklores, and cultural semiotics with the intention of learning and embracing traditional cultures amidst cultural homogenisation.

In 2019, Shayne was an Artist in Residence at Zentrum fur Keramik in Berlin and Guldagergaard International Ceramic Research Center in Denmark. In 2020, she had her debut solo, ‘Sehnsucht’ which acknowledges the existence of complex and indefinite emotions and the longing for nostalgia in our current age of rapid change.
